VR technology is an area that is growing fast and commercial devices are only around the corner. Since the beta release of Google Glass, this was only a matter of time. The challenge will be making this technology affordable and preparing the consumer for this huge shift in digital experience.
The big players on the internet have invested into the future of this technology, with Facebook acquiring Oculus Rift (VR headset technology) and now more recently, Google have invested $542 million in Magic Leap. Check out this video of Magic Leap in action, placing a computer generated elephant into your hands, in the real world.
Full immersion into 3D environments and augmented reality will transform the way we interface with the digital world. There is still a long way to go, the demos of online gaming I have seen look out of synch with the headset and there are other senses to consider, including smell and touch.
The framework of the internet has the potential to bring all corners of the world together through virtual reality. A seamless blend of reality and virtual reality is the future but how will this affect the next generation? At present, it's not everyday you see a dancing elephant in your hands!
