When we take on the search engine optimistation and / or pay per click management for a new client, the first thing we try to do is collect as many keywords as we can that are related to their site. We generally take these keywords from a number of sources including web server log files and various keyword generators across the web (for example the Google adwords keyword tool).
Some of these sources are more valuable than others. Web server log files produce keywords that are already driving visitors to the site; these are important as we need to make sure that our various optimisations do not have a negative impact currently successful keywords.
Web based keyword generators on the other hand can be useful for finding new keywords, and as a result can represent new sources of traffic for your site, which is a big thumbs up in our book. The trick is finding out what people are searching for more often i.e. the popular keywords. If you can figure out what these these are and in turn optimise your site for them, then it can really help to grow your business.
We recently discovered an amazing tool called Soovle. It is brilliantly simple, yet delivers some pretty exciting results. All you do is type in one of your known keywords and it comes back immediately with suggested keyword alternatives from a whole range of search engines and online retailers. These providers typically base their suggestions on keyword popularity, which makes Soovle a very powerful tool in the digital marketeer's toolbox.
Here are the results from a couple of random searches that we tried: 'guernsey' and 'retro'.
What a great tool! Check it out here.
